Oh, My Happy Destiny

When the stars brought forth the best in me,
And the faith-filled sun bedecked my sky,
I asked of my happy destiny:
“In which way do you lie?”
Perplexed was I, and deterrence near,
Though chose my feet soon to start unto’t,
When from he answered “I’m over here”
The most arduous and painful route;

More distant became what I most desired
The more I that anguished path did try,
So I again of my glad fate inquired:
“In which way do you lie?”
The same response, that cruel trail within,
I continued ‘til my resistance gone,
And always uttered his tempting grin:
“I’m over here” from slightly further on;

A virus now the stars, the sun now quelled,
My feet so lost and stationary,
In that dreaded condition long I dwelled,
Then once again my futile query
Implored I from that state so dire,
But from him there was no reply to hear,
Nor reply from him did I require,
For now the way in which he lied was clear.
